Michael Smith: Team 1561

Thanks for your efforts Ben. This has been by far the best information on LabView directly related to the FIRST Robotics contest. Your examples got us from a stalled condition, to getting a solid basic program written. I hope the tip jars will remain on line even after the season ends so we can further investigate the tools you have graciously presented, and go further next year.

Thanks,

Mike Smith

Ben: I just wanted you to know that we would not be close to finished on our software were it not for your videos. Thank you very much.
They were well thought out and sometimes humorous but always helpful. My only concern is that I did not win anything. Oh well, maybe next year.
Thank you again.

Jonathan B. Boette: Mentor, Team 885

Your videos have been a life saver to me a retired EE mentor. I would say they are the most instructive of the learning aids I have come across.
I grew up starting with slide rule, Basic, FORTRAN, Pascal, and C. I saw the birth of LV as a interface to run test instruments via HPIB. LV was never considered on any of our projects for lots of reasons.
Having never had any experience with LV your videos were as I said a life saver. Thank you, thank you!

Ben Zimmer was EXTREMELY helpful in clearing some gray areas in the LabVIEW FRC code. I am an experienced expert programmer, but this is my first time using LabVIEW. In a 10 minute Webex session with Ben, he greatly helped me in getting my FRC cRIO system defined. I have a great degree of confidence in our success, after talking with Ben. If you need any help, he would be the first person to call.

Andrew Nicholson, Mentor: Teams 1778, 2522

Excellent set of tutorial videos in the Tip-Jar for the FRC LabView programmers.
Thanks so much for providing these free to the students. Has made my job so much easier.

Cheers, Andrew Nicholson

David Clark, Mentor: Team 81

I just finished a chat with Ben and Wow! what a difference that has made. I thought my code would never work but Ben showed me where the problem was in just a few minutes using remote control over Webex and the phone. We had a problem with a devref that is private to the lvlib but you showed us a good workaround. Your advice really got us unstuck. Thanks!

Thank You for these tutorials. I'm a LabVIEW novice myself, and I've used these to get up to speed quickly. My standard "get a team going on LabVIEW" training concludes with me directing them to #9 specifically. I teach them in the basic framework, since it is less intimidating to novices. Then, you teach them advanced. They can then use any of the others as a refresher or to cover things I didn't. It is also a nice way for these novices to then teach students who weren't there.

Thank you for joining our community.

Kevin Reid: Team 2609

Our team loves the Tip Jar videos. They are a great way to get started on our way to programming the robot for Lunacy! Thanks for all your work and help.

Mike Smith, Mentor/Teacher: Team 1561

Excellent videos! I am a teacher/mentor struggling to learn Labview within the FRC framework. The videos are the best I've seen! They got me from a stalled condition to making progress.

Thanks a lot,

Mike

Ben,

Thank you so much for sharing your LabVIEW primer for FIRST Robotics competitors - Parts 1 and 2.

I am a retired Project Lead The Way teacher, and one of the mentors for FIRST Team 1018, the Pike RoboDevils.

My Pike High School Computer Graphics students loved working with 3dStudio Max. It seems like I spent my life rewriting tutorials in language that newbies could understand.

Engineers and technicians may be experts in their field, but often have a difficult time explaining to non-engineers how to do something.

Often when we get ready to learn new software, it is overwhelming, not knowing where to start. Your videos sure are a great way of breaking the ice, and learning LabVIEW.

YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB! Your presentations are top notch. I hope that FIRST teams will be able to view more.

Thank you so much.

Good luck to you and Enable Training and Consulting.

Assaf, FIRST Team 3075

As the rookies that we are, this guide helped us a lot. Thanks!

Georges Livanos, Program Coordinator, Electronics.
School of Applied Technology, Humber College, Toronto Ontario.

This past year, LabVIEW was taught to our college-level technology students using LV Mastery lessons. Feedback from students was quite positive. Students appreciated the convenience of being able to access material from both school and home, as well as the ability to review lessons and examples as many times as needed. This method of teaching accommodated a wide variety of learning styles and levels of ability.

LV Mastery enables students to develop professional-level skills in programming, and introduces them to industry standards, both of which give them an advantage in the professional world. It also allows instructors to customize learning experiences to fit the needs of individuals.

Humber College Students:

It is better to watch the videos and learn/show how to do something, rather than someone telling you how to do it.

The fact that you can go back and review the video as many times as needed was helpful. If you miss a step you can always go back a few seconds and make sure you understand it.

I like the convenience of being able to learn material when I have the time to do it.

I remember things easier when presented to me, rather than reading it from a book.

I really loved it and the reason is that you can access the learning material anytime, anywhere.

ID Controls

We at IDControls have been very satisfied with the expert programming skills and forward thinking advice offered by Enable Training and Consulting.

Enable Training and Consulting worked with us to design an innovative display board for Lockheed Martin in Texas, using the latest in LabVIEW technologies, where over 143 controls are displayed on a 32" LCD monitor located in Lockheed's main utilities control room.

They also worked with us to create a real-time "Electronic EXIT" sign that has been instrumental in forming a new future direction for the Chicago Fire Department.
Their quick and precise thinking brought a level of expertise to many of our projects.
In conclusion we would call on Enable Training and Consulting for any size of project to bring to bear their many talents.

Bosch Rexroth Canada Corp.

For the recent development of a Test Bench Control System, we employed the services of Enable Training and Consulting to assist us in programming the control system, user interface, and database communication using LabVIEW.

Our requirement contained a fair amount of complexity and required the participants to have a sound understanding of programming, LabVIEW, and the objectives we had with the test bench. As we are continually presented with new test requirements, one of the main considerations was to allow the operational staff to construct new test sequences from the base program without having to do any additional programming. During the early phases, Enable Training and Consulting's knowledge of programming and LabVIEW played an important role in the conceptualization of the system that lead to the formulation of the practical and innovative architecture that meets these goals.

Apart from the modular structure developped, the program contains the fuctionality to identify the correct test sequences from the unit identification and guide the operator through the test set up, validation of test equipment, guides the test process, and finally produces a fully detailed test report.

Enable Training and Consulting was recommended to us from National Instruments; [they] became involved once the requirement statement was completed. Their contribution was noteworthy and hence this letter of acknowledgement.

Of particular note is their:

  • Ability to think laterally.
  • Knowledge of the LabVIEW program.
  • Ability to listen and understand the requirement.
  • Comprehension of the requirement in the context of programming.
  • Knowledge of the interaction between LabVIEW and the database.
  • Knowledge of other anticillary software and its interface with LabVIEW.
  • Creativeness with programming to realise the requirements.
  • Diligence and ability to meet goals and deadlines.
  • Willingness to share their knowledge.

We appreciate the involvement of Enable Training and Consulting and I wish them success in their future endeavours.

Industrial Electronics Design

In 2006 I hired Enable Training and Consulting on a consulting basis to convert an industrial application from old DOS version into a LabVIEW module. The work involved updating user interfaces, monitoring some real-time digital inputs and high speed data transfers between an instrumentation DAQ unit and a PC. They approached the task very professionally and delivered the finished product within the scheduled time and budget. I would not hesitate to engage their services again, if needed.

I am VERY impressed with the clean layout and the presentation of the material on your site.

The screen capture videos are very easy to read and to hear and to understand. Even with our so-so high speed service, the pages load snappily and the site performs well.

Your voice-track is great and easy to listen to. You manage to make the subject interesting and your delivery is great.

By the way, most of the time I am looking at the site with the latest Firefox on SUSE LINUX.
